UniFi

Dream Router running a VLAN-segmented home network at KnausDev — noisy IoT devices, servers, and personal devices each in their own lane.

Why UniFi?

The Dream Router handles the physical networking layer at KnausDev’s home office. Nothing exotic. Just a clean setup with proper segmentation, which is more than most ISP routers can manage. The first thing I do with any ISP router is bridge it and let the Dream Router handle everything behind it.

How I Use It

Standard networking at KnausDev, done properly. VLANs keep traffic separated, port forwarding gets services where they need to go, and the UniFi controller gives me visibility into what’s happening on the network.

Network segmentation

  • IoT / noisy devices: smart home gear and anything that phones home sits in its own VLAN, isolated from everything else
  • VMs and servers: Proxmox cluster and local services get their own segment with the access they need
  • Personal devices: family and friends on a separate VLAN with internet access but no visibility into the server infrastructure
  • ISP bridge mode: the ISP router just passes traffic through, the Dream Router owns the network

Future plans

I want to connect the Dream Router with OPNsense running on Hetzner for better interconnect between my home network and the VPS-based virtual router but for now the current setup works.

Status

Active: home network router and VLAN management.
